From the Group Commander, c/Col Kevin Huynh:
Greetings visitor, I am c/Col Kevin Huynh. This year, the responsibility of commanding Scripps Ranch High School’s Air Force JROTC group is bestowed upon me. I am excited and have been ready to work with my fellow cadets to keep our activities, festivities, and traditions alive. Along with these, I strive to increase the unit’s successes in public affairs and community outreach. Such a task requires that we build a strong foundation: our unit must be active and our cadets must gain a sense of esprit de corps. Together, we are becoming citizens of character dedicated to serving our nation and community.
I have spent my last three years of high school, heavily involved in the Air Force JROTC program at Scripps Ranch High. I started as a freshman who eagerly signed up to participate in every event. By my sophomore year, I had my first taste of student leadership as a flight chief and drill team vice commander. Last year, I spent numerous hours as the commander of a flight and commander of the armed drill team. For my final year, I will lead the group at Scripps Ranch and simultaneously act as the Joint Brigade commander. The San Diego Unified School District JROTC Joint Brigade, which encompasses all 13 public schools in our district, will have the Scripps Ranch Vice Commander, c/Lt Col Allen Tran serving on the staff as well. I am very fortunate to have a fellow Scripps Ranch JROTC leader be on this staff with me. To end, I have spent much time on behalf of the JROTC program, but it all has been a great experience thus far. I hope that future cadets will make amazing memories and experience leadership opportunities not provided through any other course.
From the Deputy Commander, c/Lt Col Allen Tran:
Howdy!!
I am c/Lt Col Allen Tran, and I look forward towards the year's success. Here, in our little home of Scripps Ranch High School's AFJROTC, I am only one of the one hundred plus cadets that actively participate in the various activities with full rigor and motivation. As a group, we are a family - such a value that holds a high pedestal in my life.
I began my JROTC career the second semester of my first year in high school. With excitement and fear, I absorbed all that I could to be successful and drive towards a goal that I share with everyone - to be a leader who truly guides one towards their own personal desires, goals, aspirations, dreams. Equipped with that drive, I climbed up our chain-of-command, soon to be challenged with the responsibility of Vice Commander of our unit, and the J1 of the San Diego Unified School District's JROTC Joint Brigade.
Let's make this year a delicious and tasty year. Much like an enormous pizza in which we will devour so our tummies may bulge with satisfaction, bewilderment, and awe.
From the First Sergeant, c/CMSgt Jiaye Wang:
My name is Jiaye Wang and I am CA-935’s First Sergeant for 2010-2011. I was born in Beijing, China and came here when I was three years old (not by boat). I lived in San Francisco for a few years before coming here to San Diego. I joined ROTC because my bestfriend, Christine, influenced me to join. Throughout the years, I’ve not only learned leadership, but I’ve experienced a lot of fun activities with the new people I’ve met. ROTC has become a second family to me. I’m on the Saber Fancy Drill Team, Kitty Hawk, and APT in ROTC. I have also been a flight sergeant and flight commanders throughout my years in this core. I enjoy tennis and art during my leisure time, and I enjoy being on senior staff and working to make our core more fun! :D
From the Operations Commander, c/Capt Cameron Zucker:
From the Mission Support Commander, c/Capt Christine Pham:
Hello fellow Cadets! I am Cadet Christine Pham and your mission support officer for the year of 2010-2011! This is my fourth year being enrolled in the AFJROTC program. I pursued after my siblings, and joined ROTC as a freshman, hoping to gain the same experiences they always came home with. I initially planned to join the unarmed fancy drill team like my sister, but ended up becoming part of the saber team. What’s my reason? My best friend, Jiaye, had a crush on the saber commander! It seems like a stupid reason for joining today, but I never regretted it! Apart from being a member of this community, I also help out at a Vietnamese Eucharistic Youth Group on Saturdays. I teach a group of 8 year olds basic principles of Catholicism, hoping to inspire them to continue with their faith in the future. There are two things my youth group and ROTC have in common: Uniforms and facing movements! I consider both programs as my top priorities, and hope to stay connected in the future!
From the Plans and Programs Officer, c/Capt Megan Smith:
Hi fellow cadets! I'm c/Captain Megan Smith, your 2010-2011 Plans and Programs Commander. I chose to join RO in my freshman year because 1) my friends were choosing RO and 2) I do not like PE. I stayed in RO because I love this class and everyone in it. To me, RO is just a huge family. During my second year, I was the Bravo flight sergeant. For my third year, I was the Maintenance Officer. Having a job in RO helps build your leadership experience, organizational skills, and vocal skills. I'm really excited to be working as part of a great Senior Staff and working with all of the cadets in our corps this year. Some advice for firstyears and even upperclassmen:
1) Do NOT lock your knees! You may hear many seniors reffering to my story from freshman year, so listen well and learn from my mistake.
2) Drink water the day before PT and competitions.
3) Ask each other if you need help. We're all here to learn and grow as individuals, learn from mistakes and improve yourself.
4) Be proud of the uniform. You stand out and become a positive role-model to other students and even teachers.
5) Have fun!! You can be yourself with everyone here. Chances are you will find some best friends in RO, you just need to talk to each other.
6) Never say can't because you can if you try.
That's all I have to say for now. See you all around campus!
From the Teams Commander, c/Capt Kariza Labrador:
Hello Ladies and Mr. Dudes, My name is Kariza Gregoria Labrador and I will be this year’s Drill Teams Commander. I’ve been in JROTC for three years going on four and I’ve enjoyed all positions I’ve held and all my involvements in JROTC. I sound so formal, typically I’m not. *insert the coolest smiley*. So basically this year, if you’re on a team (Color Guard, Armed, Sabre and Unarmed) you’d see a lot of me (and hear *asian laugh: kekekekeke*). This year I’d like to go to as much competitions as our funds would let us and fundraise as much funds as we can! By going to Petco Park, you’ve already got a head start! Enough about the formal things, I was born in the Philippines on November of 1993 and came here 4 years ago so please excuse the horrible English and my favorite things to do are hang out with my friends, eat and sleep. I joined JROTC for the most popular reason everyone has: I didn’t want to do P. E. But as time progressed into my freshman year, I decided that I wanted to stay in JROTC. Being in JROTC I’ve accomplished a lot: I’ve been a Flight Sergeant, Flight Commander, Team Sergeant, and this year, like I’ve mentioned, I am Drill Teams Commander and Unarmed Commander. As weird as I may seem to you, please do come up to me and say hi because one of the things I’d like to accomplish this year is memorize ALL of you guys name! Have a good day and SAY HI. NOW. :D Less than three to you all and let’s work hard to be the best teams out there!
